Elgin and TomTom scoop Highways UK Award
Elgin and TomTom scoop Highways UK Intelligent Infrastructure Hub Regional Category Award 2017
Elgin, developers of roadworks.org and Traffic Management App, together with TomTom (TOM2), a leading global provider of maps and traffic data, are delighted to be awarded a Highways UK Intelligent Infrastructure Hub Award 2017.
Elgin and TomTom rose to the challenge set by England’s Economic Heartland (EEH) to provide timely and targeted information to road users while also informing stakeholders of the level of service of the Major Road Network.
The challenge recognised the need for data collection and collation regarding the current performance of the network, but also the need for dissemination channels to road users - potentially differentiating between personal, business and public transport users.
The solution offered by Elgin and TomTom, roadworks.org Pro Real-Time Traffic, meets the challenge head-on. Together, we collate and fuse planned roadworks information and real-time travel disruption data to establish the actual location and timing of works and identifying which are having a significant impact to traffic. The result is a live 'map dashboard' displaying only those works causing a real impact on the road network, and filtering out the 'noise'. This information is then shared with road users receiving TomTom Traffic services via in-dashboard, on-dashboard and mobile devices and commercial fleet navigation devices.
Real-Time Traffic helps to better analyse and understand the cause of traffic jams and recognise their role in improving the planning and management of works. It assists in identifying & implementing tactical intervention strategies to alleviate issues – successful early intervention on a single major incident can save significant costs. Further, the solution requires no additional capital investment in roadside infrastructure.
Martin Tugwell, Strategic Alliance Director for EEH said,
“We set this challenge because we were genuinely looking for solutions which improve the journey experience in the Heartland area, so I’m excited about how we can work with Elgin and TomTom to explore how this impressive idea could be implemented here, especially as their proposal enables us to use existing systems to provide better information to road users and the travelling public affected by roadworks.”
James Harris, Managing Director of Elgin added, “Elgin is delighted to receive this award and to support EEH in improving its network management by providing and communicating timely and reliable information on the level of service available on its Major Road Network, along with a unique capability to influence driver behaviour through live sat-nav updates.”
“This Award again demonstrates how TomTom is teaming with agile developers and traffic management professionals to transform mobility and help road authorities manage their networks in the UK and potentially beyond,” said Douglas Gilmour, TomTom Sales Manager UK & Ireland.
