National Grid Electricity Transmission and Hibernia Networks implement new Asset Protection App
Elgin, the creator of roadworks.org – the local and national communications hub for live and planned roadworks, road closures and traffic disruptions – today announces that National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) and Hibernia Networks have become the first subscribers to the new roadworks.org Asset Protection App* for enhanced resilience of underground infrastructure.
Though accidental asset strikes are low in number, damage to critical underground cables and pipes caused by streetworks activities result in significant costs. They can also represent a threat to security and public safety.
Elgin's new Asset Protection App alerts utility operators when streetworks are planned within close proximity of their asset network, providing enhanced monitoring capability to protect against strikes and near misses caused by roadworks activity. The tool combines an easy to use dashboard and email alerts facility. This is underpinned by a map-based clash detection system, which overlays the roadworks.org national streetworks database with utility GIS records.
Damien Culley, Overhead Lines and Cables Manager at NGET said,
“Not only will the Asset Protection App enable us to further minimise the danger of strikes and near misses, but it will encourage a great coordinative dialogue with Contractors and Local Authorities."
For Hibernia Networks, whose state-of-the-art, low latency fibre optic network connects London to key financial and commercial centres in North America, mainland Europe and Asia, the resilience of its network infrastructure is paramount. The company serves many of the top financial services, media and webcentric companies with a portfolio of optical transport, Ethernet, IP, video and CDN services.
Owen Maguire, Network Operations Manager, Hibernia Networks said,
“We are continuously seeking innovative methods to reinforce the resiliency of our network infrastructure. The Elgin solution provides us with enhanced monitoring tools relating to roadwork activity, enabling us to more pre-emptively protect against potential damage to our network caused by this type of construction and repair activity. Elgin’s roadworks.org was the only national platform that offered end-to-end coverage of our network from the Bristol Channel to Slough.”
* The Asset Protection App is the latest offering from Elgin for streetworks industry professionals under the roadworks.org Pro family of apps and services. It complements the Roadworks Reports App which was introduced in March 2016. For further information, please contact 0207 127 6955 or email@example.com
